German software company, SAP announced its next generation enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution SAP S/4 HANA in 2015. Three years have passed but there is still confusion over what S/4 HANA, SAP ERP and HANA.
S/4 HANA is an ERP software suite running on in-memory database, while HANA is in-memory database on which S/4 HANA is running. S/4 HANA is a completely new product, not a successor to SAP ERP. All interfaces of SAP ERP are also prepared on S/4 HANA to provide co-operation to non-SAP systems.
S/4 HANA was developed for simplification and digitization, and its architecture is also new. The data definition has not changed; SAP ERP and S/4 HANA are the same. The function item of the business function has not changed, but it is becoming simpler by becoming real time processing. The user interface is integrated with Fiori.
S/4 HANA is fulfilling the company expectations and is spreading like the company expected. However, since the difference between S/4 HANA and its in-memory database “HANA” was difficult for user companies to understand, there were twists and turns before this point. HANA is a new type of database; S/4 HANA is a group of ERP software that runs on that database. And each of HANA and S/4 HANA can be run in either SAP’s managed private cloud, public cloud such as AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform, or on user’s own on-premises data center.
The important point is that the architecture of HANA is fundamentally different from the traditional relational database. It operates in in-memory, handling data on a column-by-column basis instead of a row basis, realizing high-speed analytical capability and computational power close to real time. HANA came out in 2010. The biggest feature of SAP HANA is high-speed processing by in-memory technology. With in-memory computing technology that processes all data on memory, we can demonstrate performance of thousands of times to hundreds of thousands times compared with database of hard disk. SAP S/4 HANA is an advanced in-memory ERP suit designed and offers personalized, consumer-grade user experience with SAP Fiori.
SAP S/4 HANA is advanced ERP software created specifically for in memory computing. No matter what the business size is it can help you driving instant values across the business. No matter what organization size is SAP S/4 HANA can drive instant value across all lines of business.
Strengths of S/4 HANA
S/4 HANA is a platform that can digitize the core business process of a company. Architecture is different from conventional ERP. It is a simple architecture, and response times are very short for customers.
The response is got better now and it is possible to review the business process. It also contributes to reducing total cost of ownership by reducing user operation. It is now possible to incorporate a mechanism for acquiring business insights such as analysis and reporting into ERP transactions. Furthermore, the footprint size of the data is reduced, and as a result, storage reduction effect is also obtained. These are also helping to reduce user labor. With previous ERP, data such as reporting had to be retrieved from a data warehouse constructed separately from ERP. It is integrated into one platform of S/4 HANA, and the user interface is simple and easy to use.
